Much has been said, especially here on Nylon Nostalgia, about the the functional importance of the nylon slip to women in the mid-20th century. On a purely practical level, slips formed a fluid layer between a woman's dress and her body. This meant that as she moved around, her dress didn't twist or ride up. Slips gave outer garments 'form' and 'flow'. But, those beautifully feminine nylon slips of the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's had a whole different dimension to them - pure sex appeal. Slips were meant to be seen, touched, desired and wanted. From the cinema screen, to novels and magazines, to real life situations, now vintage slips were true glamour back in those days - true objects of desire.
Here in this short series of articles, we can pay tribute to the skill and artistry of these often unsung illustrators who created these lingerie-laden pulp fiction covers. We can only admire their ability to convey through art the 'feel' of the sheer nylon fabric of these deliciously feminine slips and petticoats.
